Our Philosophy of Education
Hidden Valley Forest School was founded on a simple belief: childhood should be full of movement, curiosity, and joy.
We believe children thrive when learning is both structured and meaningful — when strong academics are balanced with time to move, explore, collaborate, and simply be children. At HVFS, focused academic instruction exists alongside outdoor play, creativity, and social growth. These elements are not in competition. They support one another.
Each day includes intentional learning in literacy, math, science, history, and geography, as well as generous time outdoors for exploration and imaginative play. This balanced rhythm supports the whole child — intellectually, socially, physically, and emotionally.
Meaningful, Developmentally Appropriate Academics
We value structured learning, but we also believe it must be engaging, hands-on, and aligned with how children grow and develop.
Our English Language Arts instruction is informed by Reading A–Z, supporting systematic growth in phonics, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Mathematics, science, history, and geography are guided by the Core Knowledge framework, which provides a thoughtful progression of content across subject areas.
These curriculum resources offer structure and clarity, but our teaching is never one-size-fits-all. Lessons are adapted to meet students where they are. Movement, discussion, projects, and hands-on application are woven into learning so that children understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters.
We strive to build strong foundational skills while protecting curiosity and confidence.
Outdoor Time as a Vital Part of Childhood
Children spend approximately two hours outdoors each day, in all seasons.
Outdoor time is not simply a break from learning — it is a vital part of development. Students climb, build, imagine, collaborate, and problem-solve together. Through open-ended play, they develop resilience, creativity, social awareness, and independence.
After focused academic work, children need space to move and reset. We intentionally preserve that balance.
Seeing Each Child as Capable
Every child at HVFS is viewed as capable, curious, and full of potential.
Teachers provide steady guidance, clear boundaries, and emotional support while encouraging independence and problem-solving. We recognize that growth happens academically and socially — and both matter deeply.
Children are supported when challenges arise and encouraged to take appropriate risks, try again, and develop confidence in their abilities.
Small Classes, Deep Connection
Our intentionally small, mixed-age environment allows teachers to truly know their students — their strengths, interests, and learning styles.
Older students grow into leadership roles, while younger students gain confidence through peer modeling. This close-knit setting fosters collaboration, empathy, and a genuine sense of belonging.
When children feel safe and seen, they are more willing to engage, explore, and learn.
At Hidden Valley Forest School, we believe education should feel purposeful and joyful. We honor childhood while guiding children toward the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need for the years ahead.
