In cold weather it is critical that children remain warm so they can experience a great time outside in nature play. If kids are uncomfortable outside it affects not only their experience, but also the experience of the entire group.

Please note that cotton socks (or any blends that include cotton) do not work effectively in keeping children’s feet warm as they trap moisture and release heat, keeping their feet wet and cold. For this reason, wool socks are required for colder weather, especially since we go outside all year round, sometimes for two hours a day. Wool socks dry quickly even when submerged in water, and are naturally anti-bacterial. They keep feet warm and dry – essential factors in keeping little ones comfortable outside in cold weather. Wool blends are a less expensive option, but make sure they do not include any cotton.

Non-cotton base layers (the layer closest to the skin) are also extremely important as they help trap body heat and keep kids warm. Non-cotton base layers can be made of synthetic materials or wool. Synthetic materials are less expensive and less high-maintenance than wool and can be found at Target, Walmart and Amazon.
