K–3 Learning & Aftercare the Forest School Way

  • Kindergarten-Third Grade

    Monday–Thursday | 9:00 AM–3:00 PM | Ages 5–8

Our Core Program runs Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is designed for children ages 5–8. Rooted in the belief that children thrive when learning is both meaningful and joyful, this program blends a strong academic foundation—grounded in child development principles—with nature-based, play-rich experiences. In our mixed-age learning environment, children benefit from peer modeling, collaborative problem-solving, and a classroom culture that values empathy, leadership, and cooperation. The result is a well-rounded education that nurtures not only the mind, but also the heart, body, and spirit.

    Flexible Scheduling for Families
We know every family’s rhythm is different. That’s why families may choose the number of days that work best—whether part-time or full-time—with tuition based on a $60/day rate. This flexibility ensures your child can participate in a program that complements your schedule while still benefiting from our unique learning approach.

    Small Classes, Big Impact
With an intentionally small class size and mixed-age grouping, every child is known deeply by their teachers and peers. Older students naturally develop leadership skills as they mentor younger classmates, while younger children gain confidence and fresh perspectives from their older peers. Each child is encouraged, supported, and challenged at their own pace—without the pressure of a one-size-fits-all model.

A Day in the Core Program
Children spend their days immersed in a rich balance of:

Engaging Academics – Reading, writing, math, science, and art taught through approaches informed by how children learn best, using hands-on, relevant projects and lessons.

Creative Expression – Art, music, storytelling, and building projects that spark imagination and self-expression.

Daily Outdoor Adventures – At least two hours each day spent in nature—exploring, building, playing, and learning in all seasons.

Through these experiences, children cultivate curiosity, resilience, empathy, and a deep connection to the natural world—skills and values that will serve them for a lifetime.

*Drop-ins are available for pre-registered families if space allows.

  • Aftercare

    Ages 5–11 | Mixed-Age Group | 3:00–5:30 PM | Monday–Thursday

Our aftercare program offers a peaceful yet engaging close to the day for children ages 5–11. In a warm, mixed-age setting, children enjoy a thoughtfully designed afternoon rhythm that balances movement, creativity, and rest—active games, nature exploration, free play, and optional quiet indoor activities.

The pace is relaxed, but the flow is intentional. Each afternoon includes opportunities for physical activity, imaginative play, creative expression, and time to recharge. Teachers support friendships, guide play, and ensure every child feels safe, included, and cared for as the day winds down.

    Aftercare Schedule & Tuition

Families choose a consistent weekly schedule based on availability. Tuition is monthly and based on the number of days attended per week:

    1 day per week (Mon–Thu): $70/month

    2 days per week (Mon–Thu): $140/month

    3 days per week (Mon–Thu): $210/month

    4 days per week (Mon–Thu): $280/month

Drop-in care is also available for pre-registered families at $25/day.

    Transportation & School Pick-Up

Aftercare is accessible to families from several surrounding schools:

    Brownsville Elementary:
Brownsville is currently able to drop children off directly at HVFS via their school bus. Parents must complete Brownsville’s transportation authorization form to arrange this. HVFS staff are always present at the top of our driveway to greet students and safely escort them down to our playscape.

    HVFS Pick-Up Service:
HVFS can arrange school pick-up from Crozet Elementary and Seven Rivers for an additional $3/day per family. If your child attends a school not listed here, please feel free to reach out—we’re happy to explore additional pick-up locations when the route and timing make sense.

    Family-Friendly Flexibility

Aftercare is available to HVFS students as well as other pre-registered families. Families select a consistent schedule, helping create a calm, predictable rhythm while still offering flexibility.

Afternoons at HVFS aren’t just “extra hours”—they’re a continuation of the HVFS experience, rooted in connection, exploration, and joy.
