Why HVFS?
At Hidden Valley Forest School, we believe that education should spark curiosity, build confidence, and honor childhood. Our unique approach blends the best of both worlds: strong, engaging academics paired with authentic outdoor play and exploration—all in a nurturing, community-oriented setting.
A Balanced Approach to Learning
At HVFS, children spend their days both indoors and out, enjoying the rhythm of a traditional classroom environment alongside the freedom and inspiration of the natural world. Our curriculum is carefully designed to support foundational academic skills while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.
Small Class Sizes, Big Opportunities
With a maximum of 12 students and 2 full-time educators, each child receives individualized attention and support. This small student-to-teacher ratio allows our experienced educators to truly know each child—guiding them through personalized challenges, celebrating their successes, and fostering deep, trusting relationships.
A Thriving Community of Learners
Our students don’t just go to school—they want to be here. At HVFS, learning is joyful, meaningful, and full of wonder. Children feel seen and valued, and they develop strong connections with their peers, teachers, and environment. It’s a place where curiosity is encouraged, risk-taking is safe, and every child’s love of learning is protected and nurtured.
Nature as a Classroom
Situated on 9 beautiful acres with immediate access to the Crozet Trails, our students explore forests, fields, and streams daily. Nature becomes a co-teacher—inviting questions, offering challenges, and providing endless opportunities for hands-on learning. Whether studying science through seasonal changes or building resilience by hiking new paths, our students are deeply engaged with the world around them.
Flexible and Family-Friendly
HVFS offers flexible scheduling options to meet a variety of family needs. Whether you're looking for a full school week or just a few enriching days, our Monday–Thursday schedule provides structure, balance, and convenience. We're an ideal choice for families seeking an alternative to conventional school models without compromising on academic quality or social-emotional development.
