FAQs: What Parents Want to Know

Considering a forest school for your child but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone! At Hidden Valley Forest School, we receive a lot of thoughtful questions from curious parents—and we love answering them. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about our nature-based, play-centered program and how it all works.

🌿 What is a forest school?

Forest school is an educational model that blends academics with immersive outdoor learning. Children spend a significant portion of their day outside—rain or shine—engaging in hands-on, inquiry-based learning. At HVFS, we combine the best of both worlds: meaningful academic instruction and the freedom to explore, play, and connect deeply with nature.

Do kids still learn reading, writing, and math?

Yes! Academics are a core part of our program. We follow a developmentally appropriate, child-centered approach to literacy, numeracy, and thematic learning. Mornings are typically spent indoors in focused academic lessons, while afternoons integrate learning with nature-based experiences like journaling, scientific observation, and storytelling in the woods.

How much time do they spend outside?

On most days, children spend at least 2–3 hours outdoors. We believe children thrive in natural settings and that important learning happens outside the classroom. Whether it's hiking to the creek, building forts, or watching the seasons change, time in nature supports cognitive, emotional, and physical development.

What happens when the weather is bad?

We go outside in all types of weather—with the exception of severe storms or unsafe conditions. We teach children to dress in layers and embrace the elements with confidence. In fact, some of our richest learning happens in the rain, snow, or cold—it’s part of what builds resilience, creativity, and joy.

What should my child bring each day?

A full water bottle, lunch and snacks, weather-appropriate clothing (including rain gear and layers), and a full change of clothes. We’ll provide a gear list and help guide families in making sure their children are set up for success outdoors.

Is this just a play-based program?

Play is foundational at HVFS—but it’s not all we do. Our program intentionally weaves together academics, child-led exploration, social-emotional development, and nature study. We believe that play is serious work for children and that it naturally supports deeper learning across all domains.

What ages do you serve?

Our core program serves children ages 5–8 (K–3), with enrichment programs and aftercare available for ages 5–11. We aim to keep our group sizes small so that every child is known, supported, and seen.

What does a typical day look like?

Each day follows a gentle rhythm that balances structured learning with open-ended exploration. We begin with academic work, then move into outdoor play at the playscape, followed by lunch, a nature hike to Magic Creek, and an afternoon lesson or creative project. 🧭 Is this program right for my child?

Forest school is a wonderful fit for many children, especially those who thrive with movement, curiosity, and connection to the natural world. That said, it’s important to note that our program takes place in a dynamic, outdoor environment where safety and group cohesion are key.

Children who tend to do well at HVFS are those who can:

  • Transition smoothly between activities

  • Listen and respond to teacher instructions

  • Engage positively with peers and teachers

  • Stay with the group during hikes and outdoor exploration

While we provide plenty of support and gentle guidance, forest school does require a level of independence and self-regulation. If your child loves being outside, shows curiosity about the world, and is ready to be part of a small, close-knit learning community—they’ll likely feel right at home here.
